What Is a Ductless Mini Split?
In the winter, the system moves heat from outdoor air into your home. In the summer, it reverses the process to move heat outside.
Because mini-splits don’t require a network of ducts, they can be a practical choice for older Massachusetts homes, additions, and spaces that your current system struggles to keep comfortable.

THE DIFFERENCE
Why Consider Ductless Heating and Cooling?
- Heating and air conditioning in one system: Stay comfortable through changing Massachusetts seasons.
- No ductwork required: Add heating and cooling without installing air ducts throughout your home.
- Flexible temperature control: Set temperatures by zone with an appropriately designed system.
- Options for existing homes: Explore solutions for homes with radiators, baseboard heat, or limited space for ducts.
- A path toward all-electric comfort: Reduce reliance on fuel-burning heating equipment when the system is designed for that purpose.

Ductless Mini Splits vs. Ducted Heat Pumps
Both systems can provide heating and cooling. The main difference is how they deliver air throughout your home.

FAQ
Ductless Mini Split FAQs
Is a mini split the same as a heat pump?
A ductless mini-split heat pump is one type of heat pump. It provides heating and cooling through indoor units rather than a network of ducts. Some mini-split equipment is cooling-only, so it’s important to choose a heat pump model if you want both functions.
Can a mini split heat and cool my entire house?
Yes, with a system designed for your home’s layout and heating and cooling requirements. The number and placement of indoor units matter, especially in homes with separate rooms or multiple floors.
Do I need an indoor unit in every room?
Not necessarily. The right layout depends on room sizes, doorways, airflow, and how the spaces are used. One indoor unit should not automatically be expected to keep several closed rooms comfortable. We’ll assess the layout before recommending a design.
Can I keep my existing heating system?
In many cases, a mini-split can supplement an existing system. Whether you keep that equipment depends on your comfort goals, the proposed design, and any applicable rebate requirements.
How much does mini split installation cost?
Pricing depends on the equipment, number of zones, system capacity, electrical requirements, and installation layout. Future Energy Solar provides a customized estimate so you can understand the scope and cost of your project.
Will a mini split lower my energy bills?
It may, but savings depend on your current heating fuel, electricity rates, equipment efficiency, home insulation, and how you operate the system. We’ll help you understand the factors that affect operating costs.
Do I need solar panels to use a mini split?
No. Mini-split heat pumps run on electricity and can operate without solar panels. Solar is a separate option you can explore as part of your home energy plans.
