About This Project
For this Needham home, we installed a 15.18 kW DC solar system that brings together premium equipment, strong projected production, detailed system monitoring, and added protection around the entire array.
The system features 33 high-output REC 460W Pure-RX panels, each paired with an Enphase IQ8X microinverter. It is projected to generate approximately 14,762 kWh per year, offsetting an estimated 84% of the home’s current annual electricity use.
The homeowner also enrolled in both SMART 3.0 and Eversource net metering, helping create additional value from the energy the system produces. To protect the finished installation, we added SolaTrim animal guards around the array.
Design Highlight
Performance, Appearance, and Protection
This project required a carefully planned layout that used multiple roof sections to create a substantial solar array while maintaining a clean, balanced appearance.
Using 33 high-output 460W REC panels, we were able to build a 15.18 kW DC system that makes effective use of the available roof space. The black IronRidge XR100 rails, module clamps, and CAMO end clamps help create a clean finished edge without distracting from the home.
We also installed a SolaTrim animal guard system around the array. The guard helps prevent squirrels, birds, nesting materials, and debris from getting underneath the panels while giving the perimeter a more finished appearance.
It is an added detail that helps protect the wiring and equipment beneath the array while supporting dependable long-term system performance.
Why We Chose This Equipment
This Needham solar installation combines premium solar modules with panel-level electronics, durable mounting equipment, and added rooftop protection.
The REC Pure-RX panels provide 460 watts of output per module and use high-efficiency HJT N-type cell technology. Their higher output allowed us to create a substantial 15.18 kW DC system with 33 panels while making effective use of the available roof space.
Each panel is paired with its own Enphase IQ8X microinverter, allowing the panels to operate independently. The homeowner can monitor production through the Enphase platform, including performance at the individual panel level.
The IronRidge XR100 racking system and QuickMount Halo UltraGrip attachments provide a strong foundation for the array. Black rails, clamps, and concealed end-clamp components also contribute to a cleaner finished appearance.
The SolaTrim animal guard adds another layer of protection by helping keep animals and nesting materials away from the wiring and equipment beneath the panels.
SMART 3.0 + Net Metering
This homeowner completed enrollment in both SMART 3.0 and Eversource net metering, allowing the system to deliver value beyond the electricity used directly by the home.
SMART 3.0
SMART 3.0 provides a production-based incentive for electricity generated by a qualifying Massachusetts solar system. A dedicated production meter records the system’s generation so the homeowner can receive the applicable incentive based on program terms.
Net Metering
When the solar panels produce more electricity than the home is using, qualifying excess energy can be sent back to the Eversource grid. Through net metering, that excess production can generate credits on the homeowner’s utility account.
Those credits can help offset electricity drawn from the grid at night, during periods of higher household demand, or during lower-production months.
Together, direct solar savings, SMART 3.0 payments, and net-metering credits allow the homeowner to receive greater value from the system’s production.

Future Energy Home™
This Needham project shows how the smaller details can make a major difference in the finished solar system.
The homeowner now has a system projected to offset approximately 84% of the home’s current annual electricity use, along with panel-level monitoring, animal protection, SMART 3.0 enrollment, and Eversource net metering.
From the high-output REC panels to the concealed racking components and SolaTrim protection, every part of the installation works together to support production, durability, and a clean finished appearance.
Great solar is about more than the number of panels on the roof. It is about making sure every component is selected, installed, and protected for the years ahead.
